Peter D. Chang, MD

Co-Director, CAIDM

Peter D. Chang, MD joined the University of California, Irvine in July 2018. He currently serves as the Associate Professor for the Departments of Radiological Sciences and Computer Science. Additionally, he is the Co-Director for the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Diagnostic Medicine (CAIDM), a multi-specialty initiative to develop and integrate artificial intelligence technology across the UC Irvine healthcare system.

He is also a co-founder of multiple AI startups including most recently Avicenna.ai, a company focused on deep learning for medical imaging. Dr. Chang’s unique perspective arises from experience both as a radiologist physician and software engineer with expertise in developing deep learning algorithms, working closely with many industry partners including Nvidia, Amazon and Canon Medical. His work has led to numerous abstracts, manuscripts, five best conference paper awards, two patents/copyrights, and top finishes in various competitions including the international 2016 MICCAI challenge. He is currently a member of national AI steering committees for the RSNA, ASNR, SIIM and ACR.

At UCI, he leads the healthcare AI curriculum which trains the next generation of physician-scientists in understanding and developing cutting-edge AI tools. Dr. Chang is regularly invited to speak at various national and international conferences, providing insight into the strengths and weakness of current AI technology as it relates to clinical problems in medicine.

DANIEL S. CHOW, MD, MBA

Co-Director, CAIDM

In his role as Co-Director for the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Diagnostic Medicine (CAIDM) at the University of California, Irvine, Dr. Daniel Chow leads efforts focused on the implantation and validation of novel digital health technologies into patient care settings. This has included deployment of California’s first bedside MRI from Hyperfine as well as automated solutions for stroke detection. More recently, he orchestrated a collaboration between multiple medical specialties, administrators, and scientists to ideate, develop, and implement a solution at UCI Health to triage high-risk COVID-19 patients, which is now being utilized in a Federal Award to evaluate monoclonal antibody therapies. 

Dr. Chow completed his medical degree at the University of California. Los Angeles; radiology residency at Columbia University, New York; and neuroradiology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. He also serves as an Army Reservist as a Diagnostic Radiologist. Over his career, he has authored/co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications, and received numerous scientific and professional awards, including Holman Graduate, ARRS President’s Award, and Poets & Quants. He has served on multiple national and international scientific committees.
