Imaging Services

Imaging data is used in a variety of studies and commonly serves as a tool for prediction and surveillance. Imaging is also commonly used as an end-point for multiple clinical trials and other clinical questions. However, researchers in medical imaging are facing increasing complexity driven by government regulations, grant rules, and technical advances. The Center for Artificial Intelligence in Diagnostic Medicine (CAIDM) has built a full enterprise level infrastructure to provide de-identification imaging services to all researchers at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) in a secure process to help streamline the current workflow. The CAIDM’s research data infrastructure is able to query, download, anonymize, store, and transmit data for optimal efficiency across high bandwidth data center networks. Our Center provides Clinical Trial related and Investigator-Initiated research imaging services for the purpose of providing medical data to fulfill IRB- approved sponsor protocols. The process of de-identification involves the removal of all Protected Health Information (PHI) from each image to ensure research and HIPAA compliance.

The imaging services to UCI researchers will be provided in two formats:

1. Image de-identification, complex
(Sponsor Initiated studies)

  • For enrolled subjects at UCI.
  • Medical imaging data will be provided on a CD/DVD or electronic format per approved study protocol.
UC User Rate
$21.00

2. Image de-identification, standard
(Investigator Initiated studies)

    • Pilot, and Phase I through Phase IV studies of investigational drugs or devices; Expedited and full board level research.
    • Prospective and Retrospective record review protocols; Exempt and Expedited level research.
    • Medical imaging data will be provided on a CD/DVD or electronic format per approved study protocol.
Tier # of Exams UC User Rate
1 1-100 $15.00 per exam download
2 More than 100 Research Consultation with Dr. Peter Chang
$130 flat rate plus additional project cost
(price will vary based on study protocol and # of exams)

DISCLAIMER:
By utilizing the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Diagnostic Medicine’s (CAIDM) imaging services, the requestor agrees to our term and conditions. By submitting this request to the CAIDM office, the requestor has sought prior approval and has agreed to be charged the current rate of our services. We remove all post-secondary images* from imaging requests. The requestor will receive the de-identified original DICOM files. If post-secondary images are required, please be advised that this is per request only. Please list this request on the comments tab and/or email. CAIDM cannot guarantee that post-secondary images will be completely de-identified. Please confirm that your existing IRB accounts for the possibility of handling PHI before selecting this option.

*Post-secondary images are defined as images reconstructed from raw DICOM data that provide a vendor-specific post-processed visualization of the underlying source information. These images are typically compressed to 8-bit RGB encoding (e.g. screen captures), and are highly variable from vendor to vendor; therefore, these images are not conventionally used in analysis for research protocols. If requested, the CAIDM will provide a best effort for anonymization using the RSNA MIRC Clinical Trials Processor (CTP) toolkit and custom in-house algorithms; however, due to the large number of individual vendors and heterogeneity of post-secondary images, complete anonymization is not guaranteed.

Please contact caidm@hs.uci.edu for any questions pertaining to imaging service requests.
